In the small village of Tamasato, surrounded by mountains and reachable only through a single tunnel, a boy named Yuuto spends his days creating art. His most cherished work is a painting of a mermaid who lives in the lightless depths of the ocean. One day, as he lifts his gaze from his canvas, he sees a girl standing before him—a girl who looks exactly like the mermaid in his drawing.

She introduces herself as Ai, a “sinner” who has come to the village to atone for her past. Despite her mysterious claim, Yuuto and the kind-hearted townsfolk welcome Ai into their community, offering her a place to belong.

As spring arrives, the village holds its school entrance ceremony. Families gather to celebrate, capturing memories with photos and videos. But for Yuuto, the event only deepens his loneliness. Having lost his father, been abandoned by his mother and sister, and recently mourning the death of his beloved grandmother—his last close relative—Yuuto struggles to find solace.

Learning of his sorrow, Ai shares her own story: she, too, was abandoned by her parents. While Yuuto retreats into the world of his vivid imagination, Ai searches desperately for a reason to keep living. Despite their differences, their shared pain and isolation create an unspoken bond.

As their friendship deepens, Yuuto and Ai begin to heal each other’s wounds, yet both carry secrets they cannot reveal.
