Hakuouki: Shinkai Kaze no Shou is a remake and expansion of the popular Hakuouki series, a romance visual novel set during the late Edo period of Japan. This installment, known as Hakuouki: Kyoto Winds in the West, is the first half of the remake, focusing on the protagonist’s journey in Kyoto and her interactions with the Shinsengumi.

Players take on the role of Chizuru Yukimura, a young woman searching for her missing father in Kyoto. She soon becomes entangled with the Shinsengumi, a historical samurai police force, and discovers dark secrets involving supernatural elements like the Furies (Rasetsu).
